Fracture Risk Assessment for the general medic on call

02 Oct 2024
AGM Clinical Theatre A

Osteoporosis in older adults is a highly relevant and challenging topic as the incidence of osteoporotic fractures increases with age. Furthermore with the recognised consequences of the ageing of most populations throughout the world the incidence of osteoporotic fractures will increase and the treatment and management of these at risk individuals becomes a far greater clinical priority.
Osteoporosis at all ages continues to be underdiagnosed and undertreated. Fortunately, we have an expanding range of anti-osteoporosis treatments.
Our services need to expand to better deliver appropriate care.

  • To appreciate how to manage a patient population with the highest fragility fracture risk and in whom fragility fractures are often devastating.
  • To address the large treatment gap that deprives many individuals at high risk of fracture from receiving effective anti-osteoporosis care.
  • To improve case finding, by routine fracture risk assessment, and prompt treatment delivery as part of the role of the general medic on call
